Today I said goodbye to a cherished friend and her family. My oldest son said, "but he (of my friend's son) is my best friend." I told him he has other best friends and that he would be okay. His reply, "but it is not the same, yes I have other good friends, but they do not care really about me." I asked him "what do you mean?" He stood silent for a moment and then tried to tell me a few words I did not understand. I then said, " Do you mean he is (my friend's son) more like your brother, than your friend?" My son smiled with watery eyes and said, "Yes mom, he is like my brother." Well at least one of my sons understands how important some friends become to us in our lifetime. He understands that family bonds are not only blood, but can encompass others whom I refer to as the "Race of Joseph."
